Apparition Hill (Podbrdo)

Where Heaven first touched the hillside

On the outskirts of the Medjugorje parish lies a rocky path that millions have climbed — Apparition Hill, known locally as Podbrdo. This is where, on June 24, 1981, the Virgin Mary first appeared to six local children. Since then, it has become one of the most visited and beloved sites in Medjugorje.

The climb is not long, but it’s not easy. Yet many say that the real ascent happens in the heart.

📍 Location & Access

  • Located in the hamlet of Bijakovići, about 20–25 minutes on foot from St. James Church
  • Well-marked path begins at the Blue Cross, with two main ascent routes
  • Accessible year-round, but not suitable for strollers or those with limited mobility

🙏 What You’ll Find Along the Way

  • The original site of the apparitions, marked by a white statue of Our Lady
  • Prayer candles, personal notes, photos, and rosaries left by pilgrims
  • Unofficial guides often available at the base (or book a guided prayer climb with MG)

🕰️ When to Visit

  • Early morning (before 8:00 AM): Cool, peaceful, best for silent prayer
  • Late afternoon or sunset: Beautiful light, less crowded
  • Night climbs (especially during festivals or vigils) are deeply spiritual, but bring a flashlight and sturdy shoes

⚠️ Important Notes

  • The path is rocky and uneven – wear proper footwear
  • Take water, especially in summer
  • Stay silent or prayerful – this is not a tourist hike
  • Many pilgrims climb barefoot or with intentions written in their hearts

🌟 Pilgrims Say…

“I began the climb thinking of the rocks under my feet.
I ended it thinking of the chains falling off my soul.”
